iCloud Backup and restore

How to back up your journal to your own iCloud, restore it on a new iPhone, and what each backup status means.

iCloud Backup keeps a copy of your journal, photos and voice notes in your own iCloud, so you can restore it on a new iPhone. It’s free, and it’s encrypted on your iPhone before it leaves, so Apple and Wajed can’t read it.

How do I turn it on?

  1. Go to Settings → iCloud Backup.
  2. Tap Turn On iCloud Backup.

The first backup starts straight away and can continue in the background. After that, Back Up Automatically backs up a few minutes after you make changes, when you leave Wajed, and once a day. Tap Back Up Now any time.

You need to be signed in to iCloud on your iPhone. iCloud Drive doesn’t need to be on.

How do I restore my journal on a new iPhone?

  1. Sign in to iCloud with the same Apple Account.
  2. Install Wajed and open it.
  3. After the intro, Wajed offers Restore your journal? with the people and memories it found. Tap Restore, or Change to pick a backup from another iPhone.

Your journal comes back first, then photos and voice notes. Wajed then asks you to set up notifications, the calendar and App lock again, because those belong to each iPhone. Wajed Pro is checked automatically.

If you skipped the offer, go to Settings → iCloud Backup, choose a backup under Backups, and tap Restore from This Backup.

Will restoring delete what’s already on my iPhone?

Restoring replaces the journal on this iPhone; it never merges two journals. If this iPhone already has people or memories, Wajed asks before replacing them, and keeps a safety copy until the restore is checked. If a restore fails, nothing on your iPhone changes.

What do the statuses mean?

StatusWhat to do
Backed upNothing
Waiting for a connection, Waiting for iCloud, Paused in Low Power ModeNothing; it carries on by itself
iCloud is fullFree up space in iPhone Settings → your name → iCloud, then tap Try Again

The iCloud Backup row in Settings turns red only when you need to do something.

What isn’t backed up?

Your App lock PIN and Face ID setting, notification and calendar permissions, and purchase details, which Apple restores itself. Each iPhone keeps its own backups, and Wajed keeps the last two from each one.

How do I turn it off or delete a backup?

Turn off Back Up Automatically, then choose Keep Backup in iCloud or Delete Backup. To delete another iPhone’s backup, tap it under Backups and choose Delete Backup. This can’t be undone.
